BEFORE THE RESCUE
As in the case of Baguira, the lives of these big cats (including lions Secu and Zuka, who were part of another rescue mission) started in a smelly small circus wagon.
After finding the animals in horrific living conditions, the provincial authorities forcibly removed them. The cats, most of them still cubs, were brought to the local municipal zoo. Everybody thought they would not make it.
Important decision needed
Thanks to the caretakers, who did everything within their reach, their health situation of improved. However, the zoo closed down its activities and an urgent replacement needed to be found elsewhere.
Years of battle followed, until Norma Fuentes, the then newly assumed mayor of Santiago, finally made a decision. They would go to South Africa, supported by Fernanda Navelino’s unstoppable efforts (the mayor’s assistant).
80 hours of travelling
On March 16 2019 and after over 80 hours! of travelling they finally reached their destiny.
It was an enormous challenge and we were not sure if Tika (18 years) would survive the long trip. But she arrived splendidly! Melena had lost quite some weight in the periode before and during the jouney.
Thanks to the immense care of Karen and Jurg Olsen of the Ubuntu Wildlife Sanctuary, he regained strength and weight.
The Wildlife Advocates Foundation – Our mission is to improve animal welfare and to raise awareness. We organise rescue missions and awareness campaigns. For this we raise funds. Our primary focus is on saving wildlife. At the moment wild animals in Argentina need all the help they can get as Argentina is in a dwindling economic situation. Also we focus on giving the rescued animals a peaceful life after they are rescued. [read more]
